Strawberries

Lady in red... !

With a red dress and deep green hat, sweet and juicy flesh the strawberry of  Plougastel is a true seductress.

The existence of this marvellous little beauty with its renowned sweetness is one of the pleasures of Brittany.

Carefully gathered when ripe, laid gently in baskets this long, red fruit finds its way to market stalls from April onwards. Rich in vitamin C and other trace elements, you can justify indulging for health reasons but it's the flavour that will win you over.

Advice

To keep their flavour it's best not to wash them but just roll them gently in a damp tea-towel. You can use them to make a coulis, light mousse or flavoured sorbet and you'll taste them in jams under the brand names "Roi de Bretagne" and "Les quatre Saisons".

Difficult to resist - nothing beats a ripe, firm strawberry with just a touch of sugar or whipped chantilly cream!
