Shellfish gathering

Thanks to its jagged coastline and numerous beaches, Finistère is a perfect place for the activity known as ‘pêche à pied’ – literally, fishing by foot.

This is the most popular form of recreational fishing in France, as it costs very little to do and requires very little specialist skill. You simply need a fishing net, a bucket and some boots, if you’re fishing for prawns, or a hook and a bucket if you’re hunting for crabs. Head out to the beach at low tide, to the area exposed when the tide has gone out. What you can collect depends on whether you know the best places to go.

There are three different ways to go shellfish gathering, and they’re all on foot:

  • on the rocky areas for bivalves (such as mussels and oysters), crustaceans and gastropods;
  • on the exposed sandy areas, using a rake to bring cockles to the surface or a knife for clams;
  • in the water (at least up to your knees) to catch prawns or shrimp.

Please note: shellfish gathering is sometimes restricted depending on the quality of the water (up-to-date information available from your nearest Tourist Office).
