Right up to the 1850s, the majority of goods were transported on the waterways.
As far as Finistère is concerned, you'll notice that other than the military port of Brest and the large fishing ports, our towns have grown around navigable waterways and coastlines: Morlaix, Landerneau, Le Faou, Châteaulin, Pont-Croix, Pont-l'Abbé, Quimper, Quimperlé and Pont-Aven. All of these towns are remarkable for their rich architectural heritage, further proof of the far-flung economic influences in years gone by.
With the rhythmic passing of barges, boats and laden vessels came the fishermen and traders unloading their cargo of wine, linen, granite, potatoes and slate. thanks to their work and traditions, we can now welcome pleasure boats and cabin cruisers who are seeking a new, peaceful perspective on Finistère's beautiful countryside.
